We see at the beginning of the book the formation of order, stature and symbolism that gave civilization and safety to the boys. The previous knowledge of how the modern world runs and works has been subliminally taught to the boys from their English homeland and is carried out throughout a great portion of the novel. The display of democracy is shown through the conch, the prime symbol of authority on the island. The conch is what brought the boys together. In the early stages Jack wanted to be leader, but the boys held a meeting and an election took place giving freedom and choice to the group. Inside the group however was fear and jealousy allowing the children to be manipulated and warped. This fear and introduction of the "beastie" in the minds of the "littluns" grew and spread across the tribe. Along with the lack of enforcement and the jealousy of Jack the group slowly split and this plunged them into blind animalistic behaviors that started to breach the surface of some boys. This turned their loyalty from Ralph to Jack. After the savage murder of Simon, the boys had gone so far into their savage ways that only Ralph remained morally civilized until the rescue.
